Ashley Judd is an American actress and political activist. She is best known for an ongoing acting career spanning more than two decades. Ashley is also known as the daughter of country music singer Naomi Judd and the sister of Wynonna Judd. Ashley grew up in a family where there were successful performing artists.  She has increasingly become involved in global humanitarian efforts and political activism. 

Ashley ‘s leading roles in films includes Ruby in Paradise (1993), Norma Jean & Marilyn (1996), A Time to Kill (1996 film), Kiss the Girls (1997), Double Jeopardy (1999), Where the Heart Is (2000), High Crimes (2002), De-Lovely (2004), Bug (2006), Dolphin Tale (2011), Divergent (2014), Dolphin Tale 2 (2014), and The Divergent Series: Insurgent (2015).

In the 2012 television series Missing she starred as Rebecca Winstone, for which she was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or a Movie. Ashley earned a one-year mid-career master’s degree in public administration from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government in 2010. Ashley is a well-known Kentucky Wildcats men’s basketball fan, being present at most games.

Ashley was born in Granada Hills, Los Angeles. Her parents are Naomi Judd who is a country music singer and motivational speaker, and Michael Charles Ciminella who is  a marketing analyst for the horseracing industry.  She has an elder sister known as Wynonna, who is also a country music singer.

Her paternal grandmother was a descendant of Mayflower pilgrim William Brewster and her paternal grandfather was of Sicilian descent.  During her birth, Ashley’s  mother was unemployed; she did not become well known as a singer until the early 1980s. In 1972 Judd’s parents divorced. The year which followed her mother took Ashley back to Naomi’s native Kentucky, where Judd spent the majority of her childhood.

Wynonna is an older sister to Ashley. She was born on May 30, 1964. Wynonna is a country music singer. Her solo albums and singles are all credited to the single name Wynonna. She first rose to fame in the 1980s alongside her mother Naomi in the country music duo The Judds. They released seven albums on Curb Records in addition to 26 singles, of which 14 were number-one hits.

In response to fans’ varied opinions about her sister’s  speech, she tweeted: “A reminder for people visiting my site. For me it’s about love of [music] & fellowship with fans. I don’t do politics on here.”
After one of her  87,200 followers asked her to share her thoughts about her sister’s performance and Trump’s administration, Wynonna replied, “I try to stay away from that toxicity. . . the whole thing is toxic. I’m not giving her all the credit. She doesn’t have that kind of power.”

She later clarified Opens a New Window. that she was not trying to single out Ashley, telling a fan, “I would not bash my sister ever.”

Wynonna and Ashley  who share mom Naomi Judd and have different fathers. They have had a tumultuous relationship for years. In her 2012 memoir, Ashley revealed that she was a victim sexual abuse as a child, and that her mom and sister did not believe her when she tried to tell them.

Ashley went to 13 schools before college, including the Sayre School (Lexington, Kentucky), Paul G. Blazer High School (Ashland, Kentucky) and Franklin High School in Tennessee. In a short while she tried modeling in Japan during a school break. She is an alumna of the sorority Kappa Kappa Gamma at the University of Kentucky. She majored in French and minored in anthropology, art history, theater, and women’s studies. Ashley spent a semester studying in France as part of her major.

Ashley graduated from the UK Honors Program and was nominated to Phi Beta Kappa but did not graduate with her class. She forego her commitment to join the Peace Corps.  After college she drove to Hollywood, where she studied with acting teacher Robert Carnegie at Playhouse West. At this time, Ashley worked as a hostess at The Ivy restaurant and lived in a Malibu rental house, which burned down in 1993. Her half-sister Wynonna Judd leased her a historic farmhouse and 10 acres (4 ha) of land in Williamson County, Tennessee around that time.  Ashley migrated to Tennessee and lived near her mother Naomi and sister Wynonna.

Ashley went to University of Kentucky basketball games regularly (frequently sitting in the student section), and has also attended several Kentucky football games.

Ashley had completed a bachelor’s degree in French at the University of Kentucky by May 2007. She stated that she had completed her degree requirements in 1990 with 27 more credit hours taken than the required 120 hours.  However she had mistakenly thought she was one class short of the necessary requirements.  During this time, she realized that she only needed to “sign a piece of paper” to graduate and receive her diploma.

Ashley on May 9, 2009 she was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Union College in Barbourville, Kentucky.  She eventually earned a Mid-Career Master of Public Administration degree (MC/MPA) from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University in 2010.

Ashley  enrolled at UC Berkeley in August 2016 to pursue a PhD in Public Policy at the Goldman School of Public Policy.

Judd became engaged to Scottish racing driver Dario Franchitti in December 1999. Dario was driving in the Champ Car World Series and since the demise of the Champ Car World Series, he has raced in IndyCar and NASCAR. The couple got married in December 2001 at Skibo Castle.  The two had no children together. Ashley told the Sunday Mail that “it’s unconscionable to breed with the number of children who are starving to death in impoverished countries”. The couple divorced in 2013.

In 2012  Ashley found herself at the center of a plastic surgery controversy. This matter of “did she, or didn’t she?” came about when she appeared on a Canadian network TV show to promote her new series Missing.

On the set, Ashley’s face looked very bloated, with speculation circulating that the star’s puffy face was the result of using too many fillers.
