Dan Hurley Biography
Dan Hurley is the current head men’s basketball coach at the University of Connecticut. On March 22, 2018 Hurley was named head coach of the Huskies , after six years at the University of Rhode Island and two years at Wagner College.
Dan refused an aggressive long-term offer from Rhode Island and also turned down a more lucrative offer from the University of Pittsburgh in order to lead UConn. Earlier before joining Wagner, Hurley was head coach of Saint Benedict’s Preparatory School, where he is credited with building the New Jersey school into one of the top high school basketball programs in America.

Hurley was born in Jersey City on January 16 1973. He is the youngest son of Hall of Fame high school coach Bob Hurley. His father, Bob Hurley, coached St. Anthony’s of Jersey City to 28 state championships. He has a brother know as Bobby Hurley who is a former Sacramento Kings guard and the current basketball head coach at Arizona State University.

Dan has an overall coaching record of 151-105 in college. In 1996-97 before going to Rutgers until 2001 he served as an assistant at St. Anthony’s.
When he left there, Hurley went to St. Benedict’s Prep in Newark, N.J. where he coached until 2010.
Dan was hired at Wagner College, coaching from 2010-12 with a 38-23 record and his brother as an assistant.
Later he was hired to coach Rhode Island where he had a 113-82 record. Dan is accredited with rebuilding the program, having reached the NCAA Tournament in 2017 and 2018.
Dan played point guard at Seton Hall, graduating in 1996. Hurley averaged 13.8 points in his junior year and 14.3 in his senior year, along with 5.3 assists and 5.2, respectively. He totaled 1,070 points during his Seton Hall career.

When Dan was in Jersey he became an admirer of Jim Calhoun and UConn’s tradition of dominance in the Big East. He played for George Blaney at Seton Hall, later associate head coach on championship UConn teams.
Hurley said in 2011 when coaching Wagner before taking on the Huskies that “Growing up in this game UConn was one of those three or four programs you considered among the best, with their history, their tradition and their larger-than-life coach,”
Dan’s two primary options were to stay at Rhode Island or take the head coaching job at Pittsburgh. He was offered $3.6 million annually to take the Pittsburgh job.
Per ESPN’s Jeff Goodman, Dan was offered $2 million per year over seven years to stay at Rhode Island. Rhode Island also committed to building a “basketball-only facility” along with increases to his staff’s salary “and ability to charter for all away games.”
