Deidre Hall Biography

Deidre Hall is an American actress. She is best known for her portrayal of Dr. Marlena Evans on NBC’s daytime drama Days of Our Lives, which she has played for over 40 years.

For her portrayal of Marlena, Deidre has won many awards. In 1982 and 1983 she won two Best Actress Soapy Awards. In 1984, 1985, and 1995 Deidre has won three Soap Opera Digest Awards for Outstanding Lead Actress. She was the first recipient of the Outstanding Contribution by an Actress/Actor Award in 1986.

Deidre in 2005 received an award with Drake Hogestyn  for Favorite Couple: John and Marlena.  She was also voted Best Actress twice by the Soap Opera Update Awards in 1994 and 1995. Deidre has been nominated for a Daytime Emmy three times, but hasn’t won.

Deidre and her twin sister, Andrea Hall, were born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and raised in Lake Worth, Florida. They are third of five children. When they were 12 years old, Deidre was elected Junior Orange Bowl Queen. Deidre is a graduate of Lake Worth High School, Class of 1965, and studied psychology before sidetracking into acting.

Deidre has been married four times . Her first marriage was to William Hudson from May 6, 1966  to 1970.  Her second marriage was to Keith Barbour from 1972 to 1977 , a singer. Her third marriage was to Michael Dubelko from 1987 to 1989 , a producer and writer. Deidre’s fourth marriage was to  Steve Sohmer from December 31, 1991  to 2006, an author and screenwriter. Deidre and Sohmer have two sons, David Atticus Sohmer (born August 23, 1992) and Tully Chapin Sohmer (born January 19, 1995). Her two children were born via a surrogate mother known as “Robin B”.

Deidre and Drake are not married in real life. The pair appeared on Days of Our Lives.  Deidre received an award with Drake Hogestyn in 2005 for Favorite Couple: John and Marlena. Deidre and Drake Hogestyn reprised their roles as Marlena Evans and John Black on September 26, 2011.

Deidre joined Days of Our Lives in 1976 as Dr. Marlena Evans. During an interview, Deidre said that she thought that she would have no chance to land the role of Marlena, considering that she was unsure about a career in soap operas, as well as having to compete against established soap opera veterans for the role. She was cast, though, and the role made her rose to fame. It was was proved by fan protests when a 1979 NBC promo hinted that Deidre’s character would be killed off.  Two separate daytime television magazines named Deidre the best soap actress of 1983.
