Ethan Hawke Biography

Ethan Hawke is an American actor, writer, and director. He has been nominated for four Academy Awards and a Tony Award. Ethan has directed three feature films, three Off-Broadway plays, and a documentary. He has also written three novels.

His first film debut was the 1985 science fiction feature Explorers, before making a breakthrough appearance in the 1989 drama Dead Poets Society. Ethan then appeared in various films before taking a role in the 1994 Generation X drama Reality Bites, for which he received critical praise. He  starred alongside Julie Delpy in Richard Linklater’s Before trilogy: Before Sunrise (1995), Before Sunset (2004) and Before Midnight (2013), all of which received critical acclaim.

Ethan has been nominated two times for both the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay and the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor; his writing contributions to Before Sunset and Before Midnight were recognized, as were his performances in Training Day (2001) and Boyhood (2014).

He went on being honored with SAG Award nominations for both films, as well as BAFTA Award and Golden Globe Award nominations for the latter. Ethan’s other films include the science fiction drama Gattaca (1997), the contemporary adaptation of Hamlet (2000), the action thriller Assault on Precinct 13 (2005), the crime drama Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead (2007), the horror film Sinister (2012).  He garnered critical acclaim for his performance as a protestant minister in Paul Schrader’s drama First Reformed (2017) in 2018 receiving numerous accolades including New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actor and nominations at the Independent Spirit Awards and Critics’ Choice Awards.

In addition to his film work, he has appeared in many theater productions. In 1992 he made his Broadway debut  in Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull, and was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play in 2007 for his performance in Tom Stoppard’s The Coast of Utopia. Ethan directed Sam Shepard’s A Lie of the Mind in 2010, for which he received a Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Director of a Play.

Ethan was born in Austin, Texas He is the son to Leslie (née Green), a charity worker, and James Hawke, an insurance actuary. His  parents were high school sweethearts in Fort Worth, Texas, and married young, when Hawke’s mother was 17 years old.  Ethan was born a year later. His  parents were students at the University of Texas at Austin at the time of his birth, and separated and later divorced in 1974.

After his parents separated Ethan was then raised by his mother. They  relocated several times, before settling in New York City, where Ethan attended the Packer Collegiate Institute in Brooklyn Heights. His mother was married again when he was 10 and the family moved to West Windsor Township, New Jersey, where Ethan joined West Windsor Plainsboro High School (renamed to West Windsor-Plainsboro High School South in 1997).  Later he transferred to the Hun School of Princeton, a secondary boarding school, from which he graduated in 1988.

Hawke married actress Uma Thurman on May 1, 1998, whom he had met on the set of Gattaca in 1996.  The couple has two children: daughter Maya (b. 1998) and son Levon (b. 2002). They later separated in 2003, amid allegations of Hawke’s infidelity,  and filed for divorce the year which followed. In August 2005 the divorce was finalized.

In June 2008 Ethan married for a second time to Ryan Shawhughes, who had briefly worked as a nanny to his and Thurman’s children before graduating from Columbia University. To drop the speculation about their relationship, Hawke said, “… my [first] marriage disintegrated due to many pressures, none of which were remotely connected to Ryan.”They have two daughters: Clementine Jane (b. 2008) and Indiana (b. 2011).

Ethan Hawke Hamlet

Hamlet which is also known as Hamlet 2000, is an American drama film written and directed by Michael Almereyda, set in contemporary New York City, and based on the Shakespeare play of the same name. Ethan  plays Hamlet as a film student, Kyle MacLachlan co-stars as Uncle Claudius, with Diane Venora as Gertrude, Liev Schreiber as Laertes, Julia Stiles as Ophelia, Steve Zahn as Rosencrantz, Bill Murray as Polonius, and Sam Shepard as Hamlet’s father.

In this version of Hamlet, Claudius “king”, of “Denmark Corporation”, having taken over the firm by killing his brother, Hamlet’s father.

This adaptation keeps the Shakespearean dialogue but presents a modern setting, with technology such as video cameras, Polaroid cameras, and surveillance bugs. For example, the ghost of Hamlet’s murdered father first appears on closed-circuit TV.

Actor Ethan Hawke

Ethan was permitted by her mother to attend his first casting call  when he was 14 years old and secured his first film role in Joe Dante’s Explorers (1985), in which he played an alien-obsessed schoolboy alongside River Phoenix. The film was met with favorable reviews  but had poor box office results, a failure which Ethan has admitted caused him to quit acting for a brief period after the film’s release.  Ethan later described the disappointment as difficult to bear at such a young age, adding “I would never recommend that a kid act.”

Ethan made his breakthrough appearance in Peter Weir’s Dead Poets Society in 1989, playing one of the students taught by Robin Williams’s inspirational English teacher. The Variety reviewer noted “Ethan, as the painfully shy Todd, gives a haunting performance.” The film received considerable acclaim,  winning the BAFTA Award for Best Film and an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture.  With revenue of $235 million worldwide, it remains Hawke’s most commercially successful picture to date.

Daybreakers is a  science fiction action film written and directed by Michael and Peter Spierig. It takes place in a futuristic world overrun by vampires. A vampiric corporation sets out to capture and farm the remaining humans while researching a substitute for human blood. Lead vampire hematologist Edward Dalton’s (Ethan Hawke) work is interrupted by human survivors led by former vampire “Elvis” (Willem Dafoe), who has a cure that can save the human species.

Daybreakers was performed at the Toronto International Film Festival and was released in the United Kingdom on 6 January 2010 and in North America on 8 January 2010. It  grossed over US$50 million and received mixed to positive critical reception
