Finn Wittrock Biography

Finn Wittrock, Jr  is an American actor and screenwriter. He started his career in guest roles on several television shows. Finn made his film debut in 2004, in Halloweentown High before returning to films in the 2010 film Twelve. He studied theater at The Juilliard School.

After school he became a regular in the soap opera All My Children from 2009 to 2011, while performing in several theatrical productions.  He performed in playwright Tony Kushner’s Off-Broadway play The Illusion in 2011, and made his Broadway debut in 2012 as Happy Loman in the revival of Arthur Miller’s play Death of a Salesman, directed by Mike Nichols.

He gained recognition in 2014 for his roles in the films The Normal Heart, Noah, and Unbroken, and garnered a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for his role as Dandy Mott in the FX series American Horror Story: Freak Show. Finn portrayed model Tristan Duffy and actor Rudolph Valentino in American Horror Story: Hotel in 2015, and starred in the ensemble cast of the dramedy film The Big Short.  Finn guest starred as Jether Polk in American Horror Story: Roanoke in 2016, and played Greg in Damien Chazelle’s La La Land.  He portrayed murder victim Jeffrey Trail in the FX crime drama series The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story in 2018, for which he received a second Emmy nomination.

Finn was born in Lenox, Massachusetts.  He is the son of Kate Claire Crowley, a professor of occupational therapy at the University of Southern California, and Peter L. Wittrock, Sr., an actor. Finn has a younger brother named Dylan. As a child, he was brought up at the Shakespeare & Company theatre, where his father worked, and would often act as a pageboy or messenger.

When he was a  teenager, Finn attended the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts.  In School he would act, make films and be a part of movement classes for actors.  When he graduted from high school, he was accepted into The Juilliard School, but turned them down, hoping to get work in Los Angeles.

Finn acted in some episodes for television, but would often face rejection. He auditioned for Juilliard the following year and was accepted again. Finn attended the school, where he was a member of the drama division’s Group 37 (2004–2008). He became an active participant in the drama department and starred in several theatrical productions. Finn also won the Juilliard Journal Award, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to Juilliard’s newspaper, The Juilliard Journal; and was the recipient of the drama division’s Stephanie Palmer McClelland Scholarship.  In 2008 he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts.

Finn Wittrock Hotel | Finn Wittrock Ahs Hotel | Finn Wittrock Roanoke

Finn portrayed model Tristan Duffy and Hollywood’s divo Rudolph Valentino, both afflicted, in Hotel. This is a American Horror Story’s fifth entry subtitled “Hotel” premiered on FX on October 7, 2015.

The season’s story is set in the Hotel Cortez, an enigmatic, six-story, art-deco hotel based in Los Angeles. The plot follows The Countess, the owner of the hotel, as she tries to protect herself and her children from the fury of her past lover that seeks revenge on her, as well as John Lowe, a Los Angeles homicide detective on the task-force for a series of grisly murders that lead him in the direction of the hotel.

Finn Wittrock Unbroken

Finn rounded out 2014 by starring as World War II Air Force bombardier Francis “Mac” McNamara in Angelina Jolie’s biographical war drama film Unbroken, which revolves around the life of USA Olympian and athlete Louis “Louie” Zamperini.

It is an American war film produced and directed by Angelina Jolie, written by the Coen brothers, Richard LaGravenese, and William Nicholson, based on the 2010 non-fiction book by Laura Hillenbrand, Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption. It stars Jack O’Connell as USA Olympian and army officer Louis “Louie” Zamperini, who survived in a raft for 47 days after his bomber crash-landed in the ocean during the Second World War, then was sent to a series of prisoner of war camps.

On November 17, 2014,the film had its world premiere in Sydney  followed by a London premiere at the Leicester Square Odeon on November 26, 2014.  The film was released on December 25, 2014 in the United States. The film received mixed reviews from critics and grossed $163 million worldwide.

Finn Wittrock La La Land

Finn had a small role in the musical La La Land in 2016, directed by Damien Chazelle, and released in December. La La Land is a 2016 American romantic musical film written and directed by Damien Chazelle. It stars Ryan Gosling as a jazz pianist and Emma Stone as an aspiring actress, who meet and fall in love in Los Angeles while pursuing their dreams.
