James Shaw Jr. is an American electrical technician. He is best known for disarming a gunman armed with an AR-15 style rifle during the Nashville Waffle House shooting in Antioch, Tennessee and saving lives as a result.

When the shooting began, James ran to the bathroom a bullet grazed his elbow and he realized there was no exit. When he saw the gunman point the rifle down, perhaps to reload or fix a jam, he lunged and wrestled the weapon away from him. The gunman was captured by police a few days later. While four people died in the attack, it is likely that his action saved the lives of more restaurant patrons. Afterwards, James established a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for the families of the four victims. Total donations raised by him surpassed US$200,000 in early May 2018. While he has been described as a hero by a number of people, including Tennessee authorities, he has said that he does not think of himself in those terms:

“I did that completely out of a selfish act. I was completely doing it just to save myself. Now, me doing that, I did save other people.”

President Donald Trump spoke on the phone with the man who intervened during a deadly mass shooting at a Waffle House White House spokesperson Raj Shah said.

The President had a call with James to commend his heroic actions and quick thinking at a Waffle House in Tennessee . James saved lives when he wrestled a gun from an active shooter who had open fired.

His heroism has been widely praised after he wrestled the gun away from a gunman at a Waffle House who killed four people. He also began a fundraiser to raise money for the victims and their families.

I would take stuff apart and just hope I could reassemble it.”He started working at AT&T as a wire technician after graduating from Tennessee State University. At AT&T, James installs internet, television, and phone connections in residences. He also manages his own company, Imount Electric.
