Jay Duplass Biography

Jay Duplass (Lawrence Jay Duplass) is an American film director, author, and actor. He is best known for his films The Puffy Chair (2005), Cyrus (2010), and Jeff, Who Lives at Home (2011), made in collaboration with his younger brother, Mark Duplass.

Jay stars in the Amazon Video comedy-drama series Transparent (2014–present), and co-created the HBO comedy-drama series Togetherness (2015–16).

Jay has an older brother known as Mark Duplass. Mark is a film director and producer, actor, musician, screenwriter, and author. He co-starred on FX television series The League. As the two brothers Mark and Jay say in holywood it took them decade working in the film industry to become an overnight success.

“My brother and I struggled for 10 years making bad pieces of art until we hit that first $3 movie that got into Sundance [Film Festival],” Mark Duplass tells CNBC Make It.

Jay and Mark have collaborated on shorts, feature films, television, and, by their account, some cheap childhood remakes of The Blob. (They just threw a beanbag down the stairs.) But they’ve also crossed into an entirely new medium with their latest effort: a book, called Like Brothers.

Jay Duplass Transparent

Jay starred as Josh Pfefferman in the Amazon Prime Original Comedy-Drama Series Transparent, alongside Jeffrey Tambor, Gaby Hoffmann, Amy Landecker and Judith Light in 2014 . It was met with widespread critical acclaim.  It  earned 11 Primetime Emmy nominations, including nominations for Best Comedy Series and Best Actor in a Comedy Series for Jeffrey Tambor.

Jay’s role became more prominent in the second season of the show, Jay’, and he was nominated for the Critics’ Choice Television Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.

Prior to Transparent, Jay had never acted in a featured part. Jay was talking with director Jill Soloway at a dinner party about the difficulty they were having finding an actor to play what would end up being his role. After suggesting many actors for the part to Soloway, Soloway turned to Duplass and told him that he should play the part.

Togetherness is a comedy-drama television series created by Jay Duplass, his brother Jay Duplass and Steve Zissis. The comedy-drama is  primarily written and directed by the Duplass brothers, and stars Jay’s brother Mark Duplass, Melanie Lynskey, Amanda Peet, Steve Zissis, and Abby Ryder Fortson. It focuses on themes such as marriage and friendship.

On January 11, 2015 the show’s first season premiered on HBO. It was renewed for an eight-episode second season, which premiered on February 21, 2016.

Togetherness was canceled after two seasons on March 25, 2016 .
