Jeff Daniels Biography

Jeff Daniels born Jeffrey Warren Daniels is an American actor, musician, and playwright. His career includes roles in films, stage productions, and on television.  Following his career he has won two Emmy Awards and received Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild and Tony Award nominations.

He Made his film debut in Ragtime (1981). His film credits include Terms of Endearment (1983), Arachnophobia (1990), Gettysburg (1993), Speed (1994), 101 Dalmatians (1996), Fly Away Home (1996), Pleasantville (1998), The Hours (2002), Gods and Generals and Good Night, and Good Luck (2005), The Lookout (2007), Infamous (2006), Looper (2012), Steve Jobs (2015), and The Martian (2015).

He is also best known for playing Harry Dunne in the buddy comedy Dumb and Dumber (1994) and its sequel Dumb and Dumber To (2014).  For his performances in The Purple Rose of Cairo (1985), Something Wild (1986), and The Squid and the Whale (2005) Jeff received Golden Globe Award nominations for Best Actor.

Jeff for his work on stage he has received a number of award nominations, including Tony Award nominations for Best Actor for his roles in the plays God of Carnage and Blackbird.

Jeff is the founder and current executive director of the Chelsea, Michigan–based Purple Rose Theatre Company. Jeff starred as Will McAvoy in the HBO political drama series The Newsroom from 2012 to 2014 , for which he won the 2013 Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series and received Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award nominations.

In 2018 he won a second Primetime Emmy Award  for his supporting performance in the Netflix miniseries Godless (2017). He also received an additional nomination that same year for his leading performance as John P. O’Neill in the Hulu miniseries The Looming Tower (2018).

Jeff went to Central Michigan University and participated in the school’s theater program.  He went to the Eastern Michigan University drama school in the summer of 1976, to participate in a special Bicentennial Repertory program, where he performed in The Hot l Baltimore and three other plays performed in repertoire.

Jeff was invited by Marshall W. Mason who was the guest director at EMU, to come to New York to work at the Circle Repertory Theatre, where he performed in Fifth of July by Lanford Wilson in the 1977–78 season. He performed in New York in The Shortchanged Review (1979) at Second Stage Theatre.  This was his first show of the inaugural season for Second Stage Theatre.

In 1979 Jeff married his college sweetheart Kathleen Rosemary Treado. She was a fellow Michigander from the Upper Peninsula (Marquette).  Jeff moved back to his native Chelsea, Michigan in 1986. They together have three children: Benjamin (born 1984), Lucas (born 1987), and Nellie (born 1990).

Jeff alongside John Goodman he starred in the horror–comedy or “thrill–comedy,” as it was described in the promotion Arachnophobia in 1990. This  was the first film released by The Walt Disney Studios’ Hollywood Pictures label, as well as being the directorial debut of Marshall. The film’s story is based on a newly discovered Venezuelan spider being transported to a small American town that produces a new species of deadly spiders, which begin killing the town’s residents one by one.

Jeff has appeared as the TV spokesman for the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, promoting Michigan’s effectiveness in bringing in new companies, featured on CNBC. On May 25, 2006 he was inducted into the Michigan Walk of Fame , in Lansing, Michigan. He delivered the winter commencement address at the University of Michigan on December 20, 2009, at which he was granted an Honorary Doctorate in Fine Arts.
