Kevin McCarthy is a Republican politician currently representing California’s 20th congressional district in U.S. He served as the 55th Speaker of the United States House of Representatives from January to October 2023 when he was ousted.

McCarthy was born in Bakersfield, California, in 1965. He graduated from California State University, Bakersfield, with a bachelor’s degree in political science and a master’s degree in business administration.

McCarthy began his political career in 1987 as a congressional intern for then-U.S. Representative Bill Thomas. He eventually became a member of Thomas’ staff, a position that he held for 15 years.

In 2000, McCarthy was elected to the Kern County Community College District Board of Trustees. In 2002, he was elected to the California State Assembly, where he served as the Republican minority leader from 2004 to 2006.

In 2006, McCarthy was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives to represent California’s 22nd congressional district. He was re-elected to the House in 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2018, and 2020.

In 2009, McCarthy was elected House Republican chief deputy whip. In 2011, he was elected House Republican majority whip. In 2014, he was elected House Republican majority leader. McCarthy served as majority leader under Speakers John Boehner and Paul Ryan until 2019, when he was elected House minority leader.

McCarthy was overwhelmingly elected Speaker of the House in January 2023. However and in a swift twist of things, he was ousted from the position in October 2023 by a group of hard-right conservatives who were dissatisfied with his leadership.

McCarthy is a conservative Republican who is known for his strong support for President Donald Trump. He has been a vocal critic of the Biden administration and has opposed many of its policies.

McCarthy is a controversial figure. He has been criticized for his close ties to Trump and for his handling of the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol.
