Philip Defranco was born as  Philip James Franchini Jr sometimes he is  known online as PhillyD or sxephil, is an American YouTube personality and news commentator. He is best known for The Philip DeFranco Show (PDS), a news commentary show centered on current events in politics and pop culture that has a playlist of over 1,000 videos since 2014.

Philip has also been involved in the creation of other successful channels on YouTube, including personal vlog channel Philly D, Google-funded news channel Sourcefed, gaming channel Super Panic Frenzy, and family vlog channel TheDeFrancoFam. Philip’s network of channels has over two billion views, and over six million total subscribers.  His  primary channel has accumulated  6.4 million subscribers and 2.7 billion views, as of September, 2019. Over his decade long YouTube career, Philip has won various awards for his achievements in online content.

Since May 2017 after he regained control over his properties from the Discovery Network in , DeFranco has been working towards building “The Philip DeFranco Network” in order to broaden the breadth and depth of his content. , The Rogue Rocket website was launched on April 22, 2019.

He was living  in a car until moving back with his father in Tampa, Florida, on condition that he would return to college, which he ultimately did not do.

He  proposed to Lindsay, who was  his longtime girlfriend, on August 16, 2013 at his “DeFranco Loves Dat AZ” show in Tempe, Arizona. The proposal was set up by a question from the audience to Lindsay, asking if she thought she and Philip would ever marry. Philip responded by proposing to Lindsay on stage. Lindsay said “yes” just when her parents appeared on the stage.

Lindsay told the story while shopping for her wedding dress on TLC’s Say Yes to the Dress: Atlanta, Season 8 Episode 6, “I Do…Does Dad?”, airdate January 16, 2015.  The two announced on October 8, 2013 that they were expecting their first child in April.  Their son, Philip James “Trey” DeFranco III, was born on April 22, 2014.  On March 7, 2015, that when their wedding took place and was noted for being amply captured on social media. Philip started his YouTube career during his finals at East Carolina University when he created his YouTube channel.  He named it The Philip DeFranco Show (registered as sxephil), in which he talks about “newsie type stuff, and things that matter to [him] today.”

Before the availability of YouTube partner program  he asked for donations from his viewers after claiming to have run out of money. He also sold  everything except his Mac, camera, and clothes, and overdrawing his bank account so he could spend a night in a hotel as he found it too scary sleeping in a car in Brooklyn.

According to an online viewer census from 2007 it showed that one-third of his viewers were 16- and 17-year-old girls.  In that same year Philip opened his second YouTube channel, “PhilipDeFranco”, which includes a series of vlogs which he calls “The Vloggity”.

Philip  conducted an experiment in August 2007 by uploading a video titled “Big Boobs and You”. The video’s thumbnail image was what the title described, apart from  the image which only flashed for a split second. The rest of the video’s content was him talking. Quickly it became his most successful video at the time, with 1.8 million views. Late he changed his content to sex, gossip, and news.

Philip  made use of  his large audience to win the Spore Creature Creator, a game promotion competition, and in doing so beat celebrities such as Stan Lee, Katy Perry, and Elijah Wood. The  prize which was to be given to the was to choose which charity would receive a donation of $15,000. Philip chose the PKD Foundation, an organization dedicated to fighting polycystic kidney disease (PKD), which he attributed to his family’s history with the condition. His large online audience also enabled him to win Wired’s Sexiest Geek of 2008 competition, a reader voted contest.

He claimed in an interview in 2009, to have a salary of over $250,000 from a number of sources on the internet, not just YouTube, but later denied it in several videos.  Philip claimed in February 2012 that he paid himself $100,000 a year, and reinvests the rest back into his company.  He has also been paid by companies to create videos to promote Carl’s Jr.’s burgers, and the US television series Lie to Me and Fringe.

Philip was a founding member of The Station, but left only a few months after it was created.  He  also launched Like Totally Awesome (LTA), in which video reviews submitted by viewers are compiled into a single video. Reviews submitted cover movies, video games, and technology. Sarah Penna, the creator of the YouTube multi-channel network Big Frame is the one who was running the show.

In the beginning of his YouTube career, Penna aided Philip, securing him coverage in news articles and magazines, such as Fast Company. Mekanism, an advertising agency, was hired to promote him. Along with Toby Turner, Philip co-created CuteWinFail in July 2010,  an online series which has been described by one ReadWrite writer as “essentially the YouTube equivalent of America’s Funniest Home Videos.”

The Philip DeFranco Show which is usually abbreviated as the PDS, is a pop culture and news series created by American YouTube personality, Philip DeFranco, and his main claim to fame. It has gone through several schedule changes through its lifetime, but as of 2018, airs weekly, Monday through Friday.

The first video with The Philip DeFranco Show included in its intro was uploaded on June 21, 2007. Philip Politically, he is a libertarian. In addition Philip announced he would vote for Libertarian nominee Gary Johnson in the 2012 United States presidential election.  He said that he has used cannabis in the past, stating, “I have a prescription and I take it to sleep. Also if it makes the movie I’m falling asleep to 10x funnier, that is a side effect I am ok with.” He has described his political views as, “fiscally conservative, socially liberal, for the most part.”DeFranco says he was raised Roman Catholic, but states that he is atheist.
