Tom Scott is a multifaceted individual, deeply entrenched in both the local sports scene and the world of advertising in Downtown Boise. His journey in sports announcing traces back to his youth, where he was captivated by the likes of Jeff Carter, the public address announcer for the San Francisco Giants, who had the privilege of uttering the name of legendary player Willie Mays. This fascination led to a pivotal moment at the age of 13 when Tom assumed the role of the public address announcer for an 8th-grade basketball tournament, setting the stage for his illustrious career.
Tom’s involvement in the Treasure Valley’s sports scene dates back to 1971 when he started delivering morning sports reports on KFXD Radio. He became a household name among local sports enthusiasts as the public address announcer at Boise State football games from 1974 to 1984 and basketball games from 1973 to 1979.
In 1978, Tom transitioned to television sports broadcasting, with his credits including hosting Boise State’s weekly coach’s show for two seasons and providing play-by-play commentary during the Broncos’ national championship season in 1980. He took a step back from stadium announcing when he joined KBOI’s Paul J. Schneider on the Bronco radio team for the 1985 and 1986 seasons.
Upon his arrival at KTVB, Tom collaborated with fellow sportscasters like Mark Johnson and Larry Maneely on BSU telecasts, becoming an integral part of Sunday Sports Extra on Idaho’s NewsChannel 7 since its inception in 1996. He also delivers daily “Scott Slant” sports segments on SportsRadio 1350/KTIK.
Tom’s dedication extends to his role as a Boise State University football historian, as he diligently researched and authored the first complete Bronco football record book in 1983. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Communication from Boise State and is happily married to Beth Washburn. The couple shares the joys of raising two sons, Mark and Ricky, and shares a love for skiing, biking, and the natural beauty of Idaho. Tom is also actively engaged in various community activities, underscoring his commitment to the region.
