Valencia Wicker is a highly regarded journalist with an Emmy-nominated career that blossomed during her time as a student at Spelman College in her hometown of Atlanta, Georgia. It was there that she discovered her passion for the creative potential of television news.
Before her current role as a reporter and anchor for WKRN, Valencia graced the screen during the early hours as part of “10TV This Morning,” the morning newscast for the CBS affiliate in Columbus, Ohio. Her career journey took her to Columbus after five years at the ABC News affiliate in Charleston, South Carolina.
Valencia’s storytelling prowess has been instrumental in conveying both triumphs and tragedies. She was among the first reporters on the scene following the church massacre at Mother Emanuel AME Church, where nine parishioners tragically lost their lives during a Wednesday night bible study. Valencia considers it the most transformative and emotionally charged story of her career.
Her impactful work has earned her two Emmy Award nominations from the Southeast division of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. In 2014, she received the distinguished title of Reporter of the Year from the Radio, Television and Digital News Association of the Carolinas.
Beyond her journalism career, Valencia is dedicated to empowering others and frequently takes on public speaking engagements at local churches and conferences.
Valencia is a true creative spirit. She initially pursued a degree in Music/Vocal Performance at Spelman before obtaining her graduate degree in Broadcast Journalism from Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts. Her journey in the industry commenced as a production assistant for “Good Morning America” in New York City.
When she’s not working or serving as Mistress of Ceremony for various events across the country, Valencia actively engages in community service. She’s a committed member of The Links, Incorporated, and her personal interests include travel, quality family time, and savoring fine dining experiences.
