Murrow Award in 2019 for her outstanding investigative reports that exposed system failures at Child Protective Services. Remarkably, she was also honored with an Emmy Award in the same year for her exceptional series of reports. Vanessa’s excellence in reporting even led to two Emmy nominations earlier in her career.
In 2011, she further solidified her expertise by becoming a Journalism Fellow for Criminal Justice reporting through the H.F. Guggenheim Foundation.
Vanessa’s commitment to her craft is evident in her educational pursuits. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism & Media Studies from Rutgers University, where she displayed her journalistic prowess by winning a student journalism contest. This achievement afforded her an educational trip to Switzerland.
Her impressive career journey has taken her to various places. Prior to joining 8 News Now in October 2013, Vanessa served as a producer for ABC News on the medical documentary series, “NY Med,” and reported at News 12 in Connecticut. She initiated her reporting career in the Midwest, making notable contributions while working for KLJB-TV in Iowa, where she uncovered a tainted meat investigation in local schools that led to a recall. Her coverage of the Iowa caucuses included interviews with prominent figures like Barack Obama, Joe Biden, and Mitt Romney. During her time at WAND-TV in central Illinois, she specialized in investigative reports, further sharpening her skills. Vanessa initially entered the television world by working behind the scenes at ABC News, CBS News, and MTV Networks.
To broaden her understanding of law enforcement, she graduated from both the Metro Police Citizens Academy and the FBI Citizens Academy. This comprehensive perspective adds depth to her investigative reporting.
