Bobby Brown (Robert Barisford Brown) is an American R&B singer-songwriter, occasional rapper, dancer and actor. He began his career in the R&B and pop group New Edition, from its inception in 1978 until his exit from the group in 1985.

Starting a solo career, in 1988 he enjoyed success with his second album , Don’t Be Cruel.  The album spawned a number of hit singles including the self-penned “My Prerogative”, and the Grammy Award–winning “Every Little Step”. Bobby had a string of top ten hits on various Billboard charts between 1986 and 1993.

Bobby best known as a pioneer of new jack swing, a fusion of hip-hop and R&B. His other hits include, “Don’t Be Cruel”, “Roni”, “Rock Wit’cha”, “On Our Own”, “Humpin’ Around”, “She Ain’t Worth It” and “Something in Common”.

He also starred in films such as A Thin Line Between Love and Hate and Two Can Play That Game. From 1996 to 1997 he returned to New Edition for a reunion album and tour, and in 2005 he returned with all six members for another stint.

Brown was born in Boston, Massachusetts. She is a daughter of Carole Elizabeth (born Williams), a substitute teacher, and Herbert James Brown, a construction worker. She has seven siblings.  He grew up in Roxbury’s Orchard Park Projects.

His  first taste of being onstage occurred when he was three and one of his childhood idols, James Brown, performed in Boston. This performance sparked Bobby’s dream of becoming a singer. Bobby joined the church choir, where he recognized and developed his singing abilities.

The sentence was immediately suspended after Brown made back payments totaling about $15,000. Bobby spent about six days in prison

Bobby was arrested for DUIs between 2012 and 2013,and underwent treatment in rehab for alcohol abuse.

Bobby married singer Whitney Houston in 1992 , with whom he had daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown. The two starred in the 2005 reality show Being Bobby Brown.Their marriage ended in divorce in 2007.

Don’t Be Cruel is the second studio album Bobby. It was released on June 20, 1988 in the United States  by MCA Records.

It was far more successful than Brown’s debut.  It  peaked at number one on the Billboard 200 album chart and spawning five top 10 Billboard Hot 100 singles, including Brown’s only number one, “My Prerogative”. The album spent a total of six weeks on top of the Billboard 200 and was the best-selling album of 1989 in the United States. It also reached the top five in the United Kingdom and Australia.
