Michelle Waterson is an American professional mixed martial artist. She competes in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). She was ranked the number one women’s atomweight fighter in the world from 2013-2014. She is ranked number nine in the strawweight rankings as of March 4, 2019.

She began practicing karate at the age of 10. She trained in WuShu, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, boxing, Muay Thai, and wrestling and also holds a black belt in American Freestyle Karate. She rose to fame when she contested on the Fight Girls a Muay Thai-themed reality show in the Oxygen television network.

On February 16, 2007, she made her MMA debut at Ring of Fire 28: Evolution Against Andrea Miller and won the fight via unanimous decision. On December 1, 2007, she faced Freestyle Cage Fighting champion Lynn Alvarez at Ring of Fire 31: Undisputed but lost in the first round via submission. On October 3, 2008, she made her Strikeforce debut against Tyra Parker at Strikeforce: Payback. She won the fight in the first round via rear naked choke submission.

On March 1, 2009,  she faced Karina Taylor at Duke City MMA Series. She won in the first round via armbar submission. She fought former WIBA and IFBA Flyweight Boxing Champion Elena Reid on April 11, 2009, at Apache Gold: Extreme Beatdown. She lost the fight in the second round by TKO.

She fought the debuting Rosary Califano at EB-Beatdown at 4 Bears 6 and won in just 15 seconds by submission due to a flying armbar. On April 24, 2010, she faced Masako Yoshida at Crowbar MMA: Spring Brawl and via TKO in the first round. On January 21, 2012, she faced Diana Rael at Jackson’s MMA Series and won in the first round by rear-naked choke.

Invicta Fighting Championships

On October 6, 2012, she faced Lacey Schuckman at Invicta FC 3: Penne vs. Sugiyama. She won by a split decision after three back and forth rounds. The bout was named Fight of the Night. On April 5, 2013, she challenged for the Invicta FC Atomweight Championship when she faced Jessica Penne in the main event of Invicta FC 5: Penne vs. Waterson. In the fourth round, she won the via armbar submission to become the Invicta FC Atomweight Champion.

She successfully defended her championship on September 6, 2014, against Yasuko Tamada in the main event of Invicta FC 8 via TKO in the third round. On December  5, 2014, she headlined Invicta FC 10 in Houston against Herica Tiburcio and lost the bout in the third round via a guillotine choke submission.

Ultimate Fighting Championship

It was reported on April 28, 2015, that she was officially signed with the UFC and was expected to compete in the Women’s Strawweight division. On July 12, 2015, she made her promotional debut against Angela Magana at the Ultimate Fighter 21 Finale. She won the fight in the third round via submission.

She was expected to face Tecia Torres at UFC 194, but she was forced to pull out of the bout citing a knee injury on November 24, 2015. She returned on December 2016 after a year-and-a-half away from the sport due to injuries and faced Paige VanZant in the main event at UFC on Fox 22. She won in the first round via technical submission due to a rear naked choke. She earned her first Performance of the Night bonus award.

On April 15, 2017, she faced Rose Namajunas at UFC on Fox 24 and lost the fight by rear naked choke. On December 2, 2017, she faced Tecia Torres at UFC 218 and lost the fight via unanimous decision. On April 14, 2018, she faced Cortney Casey at UFC on Fox 29 and won the fight via split decision. On October 6, 2018, she faced Felice Herrig a UFC 229 and won by unanimous decision. On March 30, 2019, she faced Karolina Kowalkiewicz UFC on ESPN 2 and won the fight by unanimous decision.
