Tracy Smith brought her talents to KULR-8 from Niceville, Florida, a place where her family had settled after retiring from the Air Force. Tracy’s upbringing was marked by frequent relocations across the United States, giving her exposure to various weather patterns and climates. These experiences fostered her deep passion for meteorology, leading her to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in the field from Florida State University. In January 2015, Tracy joined the KULR-8 team, and she has since covered a range of significant weather events:
In March 2015, she reported on multiple fire outbreaks, driven by gusty 60-70 mph winds and unseasonably high temperatures in the 80s.
The winter of 2017-2018 presented Billings with a record-breaking 106.1 inches of snowfall, which Tracy dutifully documented.
In May 2018, Tracy covered a hailstorm that brought golf and tennis ball-sized hail, causing damage to Roundup. Another hailstorm in August 2019, producing golf and baseball-sized hail in Shepherd, Huntley, Worden, and Billings, tragically resulted in the loss of over 13,000 wetland birds at the Big Lake Management Area.
Throughout her tenure, Tracy has reported on a wide range of weather-related events, including tornadoes, floods, ice jams, and more. Her reporting plays a vital role in keeping the community informed and safe in the face of the seasonal challenges that nature presents.
Tracy’s deep affection for Montana knows no bounds. She takes every opportunity to explore and learn about the state’s small towns, mountains, and National Parks.
