Tom Hanson stands as one of South Dakota’s most seasoned television journalists, bringing a wealth of experience to his role.

In October of 2020, he joined the KELOLAND news team, marking a new chapter in his illustrious career following a remarkable two-decade stint at another Sioux Falls TV station. Tom’s broadcasting talents are prominently showcased as he anchors the KELOLAND News at Midday and 5 p.m. newscasts, ensuring viewers stay informed about the latest developments.

Tom’s dedication to excellence in journalism is underscored by his impressive collection of EMMY awards, including the prestigious Silver Circle. The South Dakota Broadcasters Association recognized his contributions by presenting him with the Tom Brokaw award in 2014, cementing his status as a prominent figure in South Dakota’s media landscape. In 2020, the mayor of Sioux Falls acknowledged Tom’s outstanding contributions by dedicating a day in his honor.

Tom’s quest for knowledge has taken him to various esteemed institutions and foundations. The National Press Foundation, The Carter Center, and the Poynter Institute have all awarded fellowships to him, underscoring his relentless pursuit of staying informed and educated on a wide spectrum of subjects.

Originating from Mitchell, Tom has strong ties to South Dakota, having spent significant time in Huron and Miller, where his grandparents resided. His wife, Carmen, hails from Parkston, adding to their connections within the state. Beyond South Dakota, Tom’s career journey has taken him to television news stations in Salt Lake City, Colorado Springs, and Rapid City. This extensive experience on both sides of South Dakota provides him with a unique perspective on statewide issues, enriching his reporting.
